The Rule

The rain had started before the funeral and never stopped. It tapped against the windshield as Ava Carter drove slowly through the narrow streets she had once known by heart. Gray clouds hung low over the town, swallowing the tops of the hills and turning the afternoon into something that felt closer to evening. The cemetery disappeared in her rearview mirror. She hadn't cried.
